Porto give Villas-Boas perfect start

André Villas-Boas described FC Porto's Portuguese Super Cup victory against SL Benfica as "a special match" after beginning his tenure with a 2-0 triumph over the Liga champions.

Goals from Rolando and Falcao helped FC Porto to a 2-0 victory against SL Benfica in the Portuguese Super Cup, their 17th triumph in 32 editions of the season curtain-raiser.

André Villas-Boas, presiding over his first game since taking charge of Porto in June, watched his team take a third-minute lead in Aveiro, the unmarked Rolando heading in a corner from summer signing João Moutinho. Stunned by the concession of an early goal, Benfica did not fashion a chance until the 20th minute, when Helton repelled Carlos Martins' long-range strike.

Luisão's goal-line clearance after Roberto failed to cleanly gather Fernando Belluschi's shot prevented Benfica from slipping further behind two minutes before half-time. Reprieved, the the Liga champions came close twice in quick succession after the break, Helton denying Martins once more and Javier Saviola putting the rebound wide. Having threatened with a header two minutes earlier, Falcao made Benfica pay for their profligacy midway through the second half after good work down the right by Silvestre Varela.

Villas-Boas said: "We had a strong start to the game. We were well organised tactically and we were always very balanced. It was a special match, very emotional."
